Non si è certamente preteso di mostrare qui tutti gli innumerevoli stilemi degli ibeji, ma semmai illustrare alcuni emblematici esemplari appartenenti a collezioni italiane.
Nota del Curatore: Perché gli ibeji?
La magia che accompagna la nascita di una nuova vita è conosciuta e vissuta intensamente in tutte le società, sia “primitive” che “evolute”, e tocca direttamente o indirettamente ognuno di noi. La condizione di gemello, di cui personalmente godo, amplifica questa magia creando un rapporto con “l’altro nato” di relazioni e affinità che valicano i normali legami che possono esistere tra fratelli “normali”. La presenza del gemello è costante, sia esso fisicamente vicino o lontano, e garantisce una sponda sicura su cui approdare nei momenti difficili della vita. Forse è anche per questa ragione che mi sono ritrovato a preferire, nel campo delle arti africane, gli ibeji e quello che rappresentano: il legame speciale che unisce i gemelli e che neanche la morte può recidere.
